You'll see things at times that may or may not make sense, but with this iconic story, all I could see was the future exposure of AI piracy.
Now, you have to ask right off the following...
"But why bother to take the time to hijack the airwaves of two TV channels in one night's time?"
"Where's the connection here?"
Honestly, none of this makes much sense.
On top of that, I was one of the ones watching Doctor Who on a regular basis back in the 1980s.
I missed seeing this unfold raw on either televised network.
Nevertheless, I did hear through all the laughter and chit-chattering that went on throughout the entire school day talking about the "Masked Maniac."
There was also mention about the "French Maid" (in FULL Cosplay Mode).
And during this weird, off-the-wall tirade of whatever sort, a lightbulb of inspiration automatically lit up deep within me.
Nevertheless, there will be a few things to overlook in regard to possible motives behind this intrusion.
There will also be a few applied aspects that will be used to try and pry out a few deep-embedded details using a well-known "numbers" finding tool called gematria.
Besides that, there was also a mysterious fellow who lent nearly 10 minutes of video commentary.
He seemed to know more about the hacking style of the impromptu broadcasters.
I'm also going to point out how this indirectly aligns with artificial intelligence that will leave you feeling a little uneasy.
But hey, this entire story is outright bonkers from the get-go, right? LOL.
Judging from a scale from "1 to 12," this story easily places at unlucky number "13"!
So, the table of goodies is set, and we have to do is take a seat and pop open a cold 7up; with a side dish of Orville Redenbacher popcorn...
"Because This Is Gonna Be One Heck of a Humdinger With Twists & Turns You'd Never Expect` to See Coming Today!"

The Unsolved Max Headroom Intrusion Eventually Led to Future AI Cyberhacking?
How could it have not?
The signs no matter how subtle were already there 35 plus years ago.
However, an inquisitive question remains...
"Who in the world would pull off such a wild double-channel hijack on a Sunday night?"
"They must have been BORED out of their skulls!"
Or was it all just a form of payback?
Afterall, the main performer (who goes by "J") was the one who started tossing names during the 2nd hijack broadcast over at WTTW channel 11—[Channel 9 & 11 Hack].
Now, for me, I kinda know where this guy was going (in terms of "Analog Broadcasting")—[Small Useful Tip].
Back in the day, you only needed fairly powerful receiving/transmitter equipment to pull off a signal broadcast TV heist.
You see my father had a powerful Panasonic Shortwave Radio, and I would mess around with it occasionally.
I was trying out a barrage of various transmission tricks that would sometimes get me in deep trouble!

Alright, so check this out...
At age nine, I discovered how to inadvertently tune into TV channels on the frequencies immediately preceding their actual broadcast stations.
I've red-X'ed out certain parts of the shortwave radio in the image above; because it doesn't look exactly like my father's did (this was the best similar image I could find).
The trick was a very simple hack: all you had to do was place the shortwave radio near an ordinary TV set.
I used a 32-inch Zenith color TV, which was all I needed to pull off this unusual trick.
But there was something else I learned too (and this really shows what a geeky kid I was back in the wacky 1980s).
I literally knew the broadcast frequency range for every channel, from 2 to 88, on a TV set!
Here a few examples of how that worked out back then:
Band Waves >> Very High Frequency ("VHF") | Ultra High Frequency ("UHF"); there will always be a "6 MHz" gap between both lower and higher frequencies:
- Channel 2 WBBM: Had a generated frequency of | 54 MHz to 60 MHz ("VHF").
- Channel 9 WGN: This first targeted channel 9 starts at 94 MHz to 100 Mhz ("VHF").
- Channel 11 WTTW: The second channel 11, generates a frequency of | 108 MHz to 114 MHz ("VHF").
- Channel 44 WSNS & ONTV): Had a generated frequency of | 650 MHz to 656 MHz ("VHF").
- Channel 66 WGBO (or "Super 66"): This channel generated frequency of | 782 MHz to 788 MHz ("UHF") | although, they also includes a 5,000,000 watt transmitter to ensure their signal cannot be broadcasted over.
In fact, during the intrusion, the masked prankster said…
"I hope I don't give the CBS signal a heart attack!"
Hearing that could indicate the group might have known someone at CBS, perhaps as a taunt thrown their way—though it's hard to say for sure!
Perhaps one of the hacker worked at CBS, and may be they had access to equipment like cameras or television gear.
Although, from a technical perspective, they might have possessed basic knowledge of using a ham radio; or even self-engineered transmission systems—[Ham Radio] , [Transmission Jammers].
So, who really knows right?
But, it was necessary for the trio of hackers to know about TV frequency ranges and line of sight transmissions?
Hm... Good question.
SIDE NOTE: Well... Knowing all the channel frequency ratings wasn't really a big deal.
The key was receiving channels picked up by the shortwave radio, that picked up the broadcast signal, which could then be projected onto another channel.
As you saw in the image of the shortwave radio moments ago, I only needed to tune in the visual and audible broadcast signal.
Here's the interesting part: Some cable stations would "time-share" TV broadcast channels, transmitting only at night.
The channel they used was purposely scrambled with an annoying vertical line on the screen, preventing non-paying viewers from watching freely.
That trick I mentioned helped me unscramble the transmissions and straighten out the video.
I could also tune in the audio, though there was a slight static sound.
Still, it was clear enough to hear quite well!
Basically, I was pirating ONTV cable without need of a cable box.—[ONTV Cable Origin].
The timeshare channel was Channel 44, and around 7pm Chicago time, WSNS-TV 44 went off the air for the rest of that day—[WSNS time share to ONTV Broadcast].
ONTV Cable would then start its broadcast into the night, and the method to unscramble the screen's signal would appear on Channel 43 (as I mentioned, it always had to be set on the previous channel for the trick to work).
My father's cable box sat right on top of his television, and he would have killed me if he'd caught me watching it without permission!
Haha.
He often wondered why on earth I was so keen on using his shortwave radio.
He never found out, but you all know the secret I just shared here with you today.
I was a bad little TV signal hacker through and through folks, as I tuned into restricted cable shows like "Spice TV."
Soon, movies like Revenge of the Nerds and Creepshow followed after that; and it was all thanks to my father's shortwave radio! LOL.
And so, it became the essential tool for "FREE" cable TV hacking tool way back then!
And it was a very enriched mind-blowing experience!
I can tell ya that much!!
Now, if you're wondering why all of that was important, then stay tuned awesome readers.
Because I'm about to explain how some of this connects to the mysterious Max Headroom hacker's likely knowledge regarding TV signal transmission!
Enter Three News Channel Hackers Engaged in Something Slightly Similar to a Strange AI Attack!
The incident began with the unsettling image of a strange masked madman brandishing that "frozen grimacing smile" fixed on his rubber mask!
This initial broadcast intrusion occurred on Sunday, November 22, 1987, at 9:14 p.m.
It lasted around 32 seconds (give or take a few seconds or so)..
Once the signal was cut, sports anchor Dan Roan, despite looking completely baffled, managed to smile and act as if nothing had happened.
Roan, seamlessly carried on, finishing up his football highlights on the WGN Channel 9 sports segment.
The Channel 9 hack was likely just a test run, or just a "testing the waters" type of broadcast.
The more significant "motherlode" hack followed at 11:15 p.m. on WTTW Channel 11. This interrupted an episode of *Doctor Who* titled; "The Horror of Fang Rock."
The masked individual needed no introduction (anyone could see it's a fake Max) and immediately he began criticizing WGN sports anchor Chuck Swirsky—[Chuck Swirsky WGN Sport Announcer].
The fact that the hijacker attacked Swirsky, who was part of the WGN news station's staff could suggest that it was an inside job—seemingly someone REALLY disliked him!
After criticizing Chuck, the hijacker started spewing out all sorts of silly and bizarre dialogue!
"That does it, he’s a freaky (or freakin’) nerd.’
"Yeah, I’m better than Chuck Swirsky, freakin’ liberal!’
"Here we go, catch the wave!"—[Respromos].
"Your love is fading!"
(He pauses... Then starts humming the "Clutch Cargo" theme song like an idiot making an obvious reference to the old cartoon show)—[Clutch Cargo Intro].
"I still see the X!"—that could be a duo reference; first maybe it's addressing CBS being stolen, or, it's a remark to point out the very last episode of Clutch Cargo called "Big X"—[CBS] , [Discovery UK]].
(Things get really odd, as he says...)
"My files!"
(That's followed by...)
"Oh, I just made a giant masterpiece for the greatest world newspaper nerds’!"
(Which is a reference address WGN the TV station they hacked at 9:14 pm that night).
(At one point he puts on what looks like a gardening glove and says....)
‘My brother is wearing the other one—IT'S DIRTY!"
(He tosses the glove, and finally says...)
"THEY'RE COMING TO GET ME!!"
(The last part of the hack intrusion features the masked guy in an "obscene position," and in the course of how the guy is positioned, he's getting spanked by a woman dressed as a french maid with a fly swatter while he shouts...)
"DON'T DO IT! NOOOOOO!"
(The intrusion ends, and seconds after a pitch black screen).
And from there no one had damn a clue, but they were very happy regular TV transmission once again reverted back to their favorite show Dr. Who!
LOL. I had to make a rhyme out of that, just couldn't resist folks...
Nevertheless, after the intrusion hack ended, that's where tons of calls poured out over the power lines triggering ringing phones at WTTW all night long!
The next day, all the rumors just kept spreading like rampant cancer, curious Chicagoland viewers wanted to know who was behind Max's rubber mask!

What Type of Equipment Was Needed to Pull Off the Intrusion Signal?
Viewers believed the hijackers likely spent a great deal of money to acquire powerful broadcasting equipment.
However, I must interject to say that's not quite the case...
Remember, I mentioned how I hacked ONTV Cable.
I only needed a TV and a Shortwave Radio, which involved simply tuning in cable channels with the tuner knob; that would cast a "greyscale" signal on the previous station before the actual broadcast channel.
So, in their case, it wouldn't take much to accomplish a broadcast hack.
Therefore, these individuals may have had access to either a simple TV broadcast kit or amateur (Ham) radio broadcasting equipment-[Ham TV].
Honestly, you don't even need a powerful transmitter to pull this off!
All it takes is specific broadcasting scenarios to get the job done.
With that in mind, let's dive into the details of these types of transmissions in the next two sections.

The TV Kit Hack Theory |
The most incredible part of the story is how the hacker managed to interfere with the signals for both Channel 9 and 11.
Most broadcast experts believe the explanation involves what's known as a TV kit—essentially a mobile, low-power pirate TV station.
This makes a lot of sense, particularly since the "Sears Tower" (now the Willis Tower) was the aimed target of the hack.
Ordinarily, a grounded weaker signal wouldn't be able to transmit a signal across a wide area like Chicagoland.
So, instead, the hijackers simply aimed their signal directly at the tower while at a higher altitude.
The tower's receiver was specifically tuned to their frequency, and the hacker's signal completely overpowered the station's legitimate broadcast!
So in retrospect, it's an all-or-nothing situation where one signal cancels out the other weaker signal; will then be the one to broadcast its dominant signal.

The Ham Amateur Radio Hack Theory |
So, this will likely be the most referenced hack theory which is usage of amateur Ham Radio Operators (or what's known as "hams")—[VICE].
A lot of ham radio experts think the hijackers really knew their stuff.
Just like with the TV kit, they had to be in a high spot and aim their signal precisely at the Sears or Hancock tower to pull off the hack.
Even with all the attention the Max Headroom TV signal intrusion still gets today, it probably wouldn't matter if the culprits were identified.
The statute of limitations (time) has run out, so they can't be prosecuted for the hack incident anymore—[VICE].
Since the case didn't involve murder and the attackers' motives were never officially figured out, the FBI's investigation eventually went cold.
FCC spokesman Phil Bradford did mention that anyone caught would be looking at a $100,000 fine and a year in federal prison.
Even so, that was just a hypothetical since no one was ever arrested—[VICE].
“All in all, there are some who may view this as comical.”
“But it is a very serious matter because illegal interference of a broadcast signal is a violation of federal law."—[VICE].
—Statements from WTTW spokesman Anders Yocom.
Inserting An Esoteric Calculation Number Deciphering System to Hash Out Additional Clues
Alright, let's get down to the good stuff on this strange '80s hack.
First, we'll round up all the key facts about the case. Then, I'm going to try something a little out there: I'll use some numerology.
Maybe, just maybe, it'll help us find a clue or two that everyone else has missed.
I mean, what do we have to lose?
Everything else has already been tried, right?
We're essentially taking a fresh look at this nearly 40-year-old cold case.
And a bit of gematria might be just what's needed to find some new angles!

In the next section the key phrases and number meanings will be used to align possible connections using a 4-based cypher (this is Strategic Gematria):
The basic approach when formulating these numeric values from the words and terms are derived from phrases that often connect to broader themes.
So, things such as "Rituals," "Secret Societies," and particularly "The Jesuit Order," and "Freemasons," will apply to get ideal results.
You can add more to that list starting with "Death," "Murder," "Sacrifice," "Propaganda," and "Hoaxes."
Such words and phrases hold meaning, because matching numbers in the same cipher imply a symbolic link.
Like words or phrases totalling up to "54," in Full Reduction might tie to "Jesuit Order," (which also equals "54" in Full Reduction).
The overall suggestion points to the event or incident as orchestrated influence.
What gematria does is reveals potential details that may wound up getting discarded.
But that just may be the missing link, in this case I used it to try and tie in something that maybe ritualistic, or linked to an conspiratorial element.
In regard to the Max Headroom Hack, it's plausible for one think this could be aligned with some form of media control, or propaganda agenda, even possible secret society involvement.
Recurring numbers like 54 (Sun themes), 46 (Sacrifice), 81 (Ritual), stand out, hinting at a "scripted" event.
Recurring Themes & Insights:
- Jesuit/Masonic Ties: Numbers like 54, 84, 78, 105, and 158 appear frequently, matching "Jesuit," "Jesuit Order," "Masonry," and "Freemasonry." This could suggest the hack was a symbolic "ritual" by hidden groups controlling media (e.g., television as propaganda)
- Death/Sacrifice/Murder**: Matches to "Kill" (44, 64, 17), "Death" (38, 97, 25), "Murder" (38, 34), "Sacrifice" (73, 46, 62), and "Dead/End" (14). The 32-second hack on a Sunday night might symbolize a "killing" of signal or truth.
- Hoax/Propaganda/Media Control: Ties to "Hoax" (48, 60), "Propaganda" (93, 48), "Television" (130, 49), "False Flag" (33, 69). The pirate signal disruption aligns with themes of faked events or controlled narratives.
- Conspiracy: Matches to "Conspiracy" (51, 123, 147), "Authority" (137, 47).
Other Overlooked Connections:
"Twin Towers" and "Nine Eleven" is in the list that ties in with 9/11 themes (77 and 93).
The hack between Chicago towers (John Hancock and Sears) mirrors "Twin Towers," possibly foreshadowing controlled demolitions or media hoaxes.
Chicago runs along the 87th and 88th Meridian West (near "Seventy-Six Meridian") which connects to "Saturn" (93) or time/ritual cycles.
Table of Matches Only phrases with matches to key concepts are listed.
Meanings are based on exact numerical equals in the cipher.
If there's no match, then it's removed for annalistic accuracy.
Another key aspect are the following Gematria abbreviations which are the following (below)...
- EO (English Ordinal): This is the most straightforward cipher. Each letter is assigned a number based on its position in the alphabet. A=1, B=2, C=3, and so on, up to Z=26. The values of the letters are added together to get the final sum.
- RO (Reduction Ordinal): This cipher reverses the alphabet's numerical order. The letter A is 26, B is 25, C is 24, and so on, down to Z being 1. The values are then added together.
- RR (Reverse Reduction): This cipher combines both the reverse and reduction methods. First, the letters are assigned their reverse ordinal values (A=26, B=25, etc.). Then, any two-digit value is reduced to a single digit by adding its digits together (e.g., A=26 becomes 2+6=8). The final values are then summed up.
- FR (Forward Reduction): This cipher is a bit more complex. It's similar to EO (English Ordinal), but the values are "reduced." If a letter's ordinal value is greater than 9, you add its digits together to get a single-digit number (e.g., K=11 becomes 1+1=2). The values for each letter are then added up. Also, keep in mind that the FR cipher can also be substituted in for the "RO" cipher (Reduction Ordinal) for the same numeric value and vice-versa.
- Purposeful Items: Information within the findings will be used as the "connecting element," bridging together ciphers and the phrases aligned with that particular ciphers.
- " = " The equal sign serves as "confirmation" of the phrase associated with a cipher's number result.

Final Thoughts
There's really not too much more to say about this ongoing mystery behind this nutcase TV hack that took place nearly forty years ago.
However, it does suggest the person called "J," might have a huge grudge against the television broadcasting industry.
So, targeted people like Chuck Swirsky is a key aspect.
Now, was this someone Chuck knew back then?
And if so, could he identify this person, as well as having technical knowledge in communication (particularly someone named "J" if that's a nickname).
After all, it was stated by "J's" brother "K," that J was edgy and couldn't resist trying things such as this.
And while we're at it...
There's also another potential suspect involved in this intrusion broadcast caper.
There was a guy who did a video (guessing from the 2010s), who lays out quite the detailed information similar to what was mentioned in this article.
So, I made sure to leave a video posted below, you're going to want to check it out below toward the bottom of this article!
And the video just looks super-suspicious...
Because the guy talking in the video has everything blacked out in the background, which leads me to believe that he could be "J" or "K" (just saying).
Can't help but to say that, because he does say at one point or another the following phrase...
"It's not my first rodeo!"
And he starts to chuckle with light-laughter—so to me, he's a definite suspect!
He also references the Hancock building's location as 2500 West Bradley Place, and the Sears Tower at 5400 North St. Louis Ave.
He stated those are the best intersecting perimeter locations, for best receiving and transferring a strong broadcast signal to and from.
Plus he said...
"The initial interruption was around 9, and Channel 11 was around 11; I'm sorry but that just kinda popped up in my head, way not think about it that way."
"Ok, what then?"
"Is he trying to bring up something like a pre-planned event that leads to the 2001 attack (I not going to say it; I'm not trying to anger anyone who lost a loved one that fateful day)."
So, you see why I chose to use Gematria, to see if it could pull up any additional leads like you saw earlier in this article post.
Oh yeah, almost forgot...
"Would anyone say such a hackfest like this inspired future AI hackers to pull off even more risky attempts like these TV pirates did in the late 80s?
Well, of course, after all AI Max Headroom's show tagline made sure to mention the phrase—"Twenty Minutes into the Future!"
Ok, so that's it for me, I hope you guys enjoy this; and hopefully this helps for anyone still curious about this hack of the 20th Century!
However, no one thus far in the 21st came at the story the way I did today! LOL.
Hopefully, using Gematria might help hash out anything hidden deep cracks that might have been overlooked in this weirdest of surreal broadcasting hacks!
But hey, there's always a first, when taking an entirely different approach trying to crack a nearly forty year old case!

Thank you for your readership! 😄
